Accusing someone of a crime is serious business. A recent case in Milwaukee is making headlines. A woman there is being accused of making false accusations of sexual assault against a man. Now she herself is facing a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer.
Police say the woman accused the man of sexual assault in late December. At the time, she apparently told police that she met the man, with whom she shares custody of a child, in a Culver's parking lot to pick the child up.
The woman had apparently claimed that as she was placing the child in a car seat in the back of an SUV, the man came up behind her, put his hands down her pants and grabbed her.
She also claimed that later in the day they both returned to the parking lot, at which point he forced her into the back of his vehicle, closed the door and sexually assaulted her.
However, the man told police nothing criminal took place. He says they went to a different parking lot and had consensual sex in his vehicle. Video surveillance from the parking lot showed the two vehicles parked near each other and ultimately leaving at the same time. Police apparently told the woman of the video's existence, and she admitted she made up her claims.
The woman is due back in court in mid-February. The consequences of making up assault charges can be serious.
